A client is admitted with pre-eclampsia. A magnesium sulfate infusion is ordered 40 grams in 1000 mL of D5W. The bolus is 4 grams over 30 minutes, followed by a maintenance rate of 0.5 grams/hour. How many mL/hr is the maintenance dose?
2). A client is prescribed oxytocin 2 mU/min. The pharmacy delivers 30 units in 500 mL. How many mL/hr should the nurse administer to the client? Round answer to the nearest whole number.
Question number1:
What we have is 40 mg magnesium sulphate in 1000ml D5w.
So,1gm magnesium sulphate =? ml
ie,1000÷40
=25 ml.
So 1gm magnesium sulphate in 25ml D5W.
Prescribed maintenance dose is 0.5gm/hour
So the fluid rate will be 12.5ml/hour
Question no 2:
1 unit =1000mili units
What the pharmacy delivers is 30units in 500 ml.
ie,30×1000milliunits in 500 ml.
So find out 1ml=? milliunit
ie,30000÷500
=60milliunits .
Prescribed dose is 2milli units per minute.so per hourly 2milliunits ×60
ie,120milliunits per hour.
So the fluid rate should be 2ml per hour.
