There are mixed both positive and negative impacts of provision of personal support on older people.These potential positive and negative impacts of providing personal support to the older persons are discussed below;

Positive impacts:

Positive impact of providing personal support to the older persons includes

1. Good health and better personal care with proper feeding and improved self care with assistance

2. Increased the quality of life,feeling of securtity and empowerment on getting assistance(especially in those with severe disabilities living alone)

3. Improved self confidence,feeling of worthiness and usefulness to the society due to care provision.

4. Provision of company and personal attention decreasing the feeling of loneliness,depression and tstress.

5. Learning of self care management skills and watchful attention leading to feeling of safety and Protection from injury and harm

negative impacts:

1.Embarrassment

Feelings of embarrassment often related to the need of help in private activities like usage of washroom ,bathing,dressing and stems from an innate need of human being for privacy.

2.Fear

Fear of losing control over their lives and fear of intrusion into their personal space creates a negative impact on the older adult.

3.Feelings of Humiliation

Presence of an outsider/ stranger to assist with their daily activities specially those involving the bladder and the bowel activities may be associated with the feeling of humiliation especially if they are not met with the proper respect and privacy.

4.Perception of loss of dignity,low selfesteem and self-confidence.

The feeling of a loss of dignity,low self esteem and self-confidence arises from feeling of being a burden to family and society needing care, personal need to be provided for,financial inadequacy,personal inability to manage selfcare and intrusion into the privacy in activities related to daily care such as washing, bathing, dressing ,bowel and bladder assistance.

5.Discomfort

The older adult may feel discomforted due to interference of the support worker in his or her daily activities and loss of personal space

6.Disempowerment

The recognition of the inability to do the activities of daily living, minor tasks on his/her own by the older adult leads to feelings of powerlessness and .disempowerment.

7.Loss of control feeling.

The older people feel the loss of control over their physical and mental capabilities due to dependency on the support worker for the daily personal needs.

4.Risk of age related chronic diseases like stroke,heart diseases impairing the normal functioning and making the older adult sick and disabled.

1.Increased risk of injury due to the home environmental conditions like home environmental hazards like excessive furniture obstructing the free movement to the older adult, poor lightning in the house leading to poor visibility and  increased risk of falls,dangling wires and ropes increasing risk of tripping,slippery wet ,uneven floor and surfaces, poor home maintenance with disorganized placement of things and dust collection increasing the risk of accidents and infection.

2.Evidence of self neglect as may be seen by the patient not eating properly,not cleaning himself well,losing weight,not grooming himself, not taking care of himself.,neglecting his medications leading to poor health,malnutrition,infections and ill maintenance.
