What are nonconformists missing when arguing that import restrictions can create jobs? What are the real consequences of bad trade policy? What kind of trade restrictions would you support and why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

NON CONFORMISTS:

The definition of a nonconformist is a person who refuses to adhere to established social orders or to fulfill the expectations placed on him by custom or society. A free-thinking hippie who refuses to get a conventional job is an example of a nonconformist.

A nonconformist is someone who doesn't conform to other people's ideas of how things should be. Activists, artists, street performers, your wacky uncle Marvin — anyone who marches to the beat of a different drummer is a nonconformist.

Trade barriers such as tariffs raise prices and reduce available quantities of goods and services for U.S. businesses and consumers, which results in lower income, reduced employment, and lower economic output.

International trade increases the number of goods that domestic consumers can choose from, decreases the cost of those goods through increased competition, and allows domestic industries to ship their products abroad. While all of these effects seem beneficial, free trade isn't widely accepted as completely beneficial to all parties.
