Evaluate (critique) the model/theory using criteria in Chinn & Kramer (2015, p. 199- 209) related to critical reflection. Neuman's systerm models
-Chin and Kramer (2015) proposes that theories should be evaluated using two criteriea
- 1. Theory description 2. Critical reflection
- According to critical reflection, theories should be examined how well a theory meets its purpose, clarity, consistency, complexity, generality, accessibility and importance.
About theory; Betty Neuman's Theory focuses on stress and stress reduction , it is primarily concerned with the effects of stress on health.
Critical reflection :
1. Meeting its purposes: yes, it is a comprehensive approach to nursing, that provides muti-dimensional view about a person as an individual.
2. Clarity : It is a comprehensive model addresses the constant interaction between a client and the environment .It has abstract concepts . Abstarcts are clearly defined and interrelated to each other with lines an circles.
3. Consistency: The person has core consisting of basic structures. She defined stressors as environmental force , and noted as interpersonal, intrapersonal, and extrapersonal. Explained degree of reaction takesplace when the person interact with stressors, and explained possible interventions in three preventive phases.
4. Complexity : Interrelationship between person and environmental stressors are plotted with mutiple lines and circle. However, the descriptions are easy to understand.
5. Generality : Based on scope of theory. It is applicable in situations like providing community health care , persons with chronic illness and psychological issues. LImited application in totaly dependent personand crtical patients care. Nurses can apply this theory in care settings to identify patient's problem, causes of problem and to plan measures to manage those problems. Here, all issues are mentioned as stressors.
6. Accesibility: Easy to use in all levels of preventive practices.Based on this theory, the steps of nursing process includes nursing diagnosis, goals and outcomes.
7. Importance : Useful guide for formulating nursing careplan, developing conceptual framework in research.
