Examine the Strength and weakness if nightingles theory using the criteria from chinn and karmmer
Nightingale's concepts of theory are brief, simple and easy to
understand. It is still applicable to practice today. It makes the
nurses to work more efficiently by using their own intuition about
patient care and modification of environment. health but
collaboration with nurse and environmental factors. This model was
developed by Peggy Chinn and MaenoaKramer in 1983. The model
utilizes a two-step process toevaluate theories called theory
description and critical reflection. Theory description consists of
purpose, concepts, definitions, relationships, structure, and
assumptions. One of the biggest overallweaknesses of the theory is
the assumption that disease is always a direct result of the
environment (Nightingale, 1859). While disease can be caused by
environmental factors, it is also caused by other factors such as
genetics and trauma (Selanders, 2010). The theory is broad in
scope, which is applicable to abundance of nursing processes. ie.
Strengths and Weaknesses Weaknesses: o The assumption that the
disease is a direct result of the environment. o The theory is
limited to 13 sub concepts. o It lacks the specific definitions for
the concepts and sub concepts (Dossey, 2010). Strengths: o
Nightingale’s creation of complete nursing care. o Theory’s sub
concepts are timeless. o Theory’s emphasizes on observation and
data collection, which is now, evidence-based practice. o The
theory is applicable to everyone.
