Velteri vs flolan – how set up and how they work. Amount of drug used. Types of diseases used on.
1) Veletri is injected with an infusion pump, usually through a
permanent central intravenous (IV) catheter placed into a large
vein such as in your chest. A healthcare provider will give your
first dose and may teach you how to properly use the medication by
yourself.
Veletri medication is used to treat high blood pressure in the
lungs (pulmonary arterial hypertension). It helps to increase your
ability to exercise and improve symptoms such as shortness of
breath and tiredness. It works by relaxing and widening the blood
vessels (arteries) in the lungs and other parts of the body so that
blood can flow more easily. This medication belongs to a class of
drugs known as vasodilators. Veletri is a synthetic version of a
substance found in the body called prostacyclin, an eicosanoid. It
works by dilating blood vessels, preventing contraction of smooth
muscle cells and reducing the stickiness of circulating platelets.
The drug also helps the heart to effectively pump blood through the
lungs.VELETRI, once prepared as directed is administered by
continuous intravenous infusion via a central venous catheter using
an ambulatory infusion pump. During initiation of treatment,
VELETRI may be administered peripherally. Infusion sets with an
in-line 0.22 micron filter should be used. Intravenous dosage
Adults infusion rate is determined via a dose-ranging procedure.
The infusion rate is initiated at 2 ng/kg/minute, then increased by
2 ng/kg/minute at intervals of >= 15 minutes until dose-limiting
pharmacological effects are observed.
Whereas, Flolan is a prostaglandin (a hormone-like substance that
occurs naturally in the body). Prostaglandins help to control
functions in the body such as blood pressure and muscle
contractions. Flolan is used to treat pulmonary arterial
hypertension(PAH) and improve your ability to exercise. When
administered chronically, prepare FLOLAN in a drug delivery
reservoir appropriate for the infusion pump with a total reservoir
volume of at least 100 mL, using 2 vials of STERILE DILUENT for
FLOLAN or 2 vials of pH 12 STERILE DILUENT for FLOLAN. It works by
relaxing and widening the blood vessels (arteries) in the lungs and
other parts of the body so that blood can flow more easily. This
medication belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators. Each
vial of FLOLAN contains epoprostenol sodium equivalent to either
0.5 mg (500,000 ng) or 1.5 mg (1,500,000 ng) epoprostenol, 3.76 mg
glycine, 50 mg mannitol, and 2.93 mg sodium chloride.

Pulmonary Hypertension
Initial: 2 ng/kg/min IV infusion pump over 24-48 hours; may
initiate at lower dose if intolerant to starting dose. Titrate by
1-2 ng/kg/min q15min or longer, until desired effect or
dose-limiting pharmacologic effects occur.
