A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a medical device that is sometimes used as an alternative to heart transplant for patients who have a weakened left ventricle. Once implanted, the LVAD pumps blood from the left ventricle to the aorta. Name the phase of the cardiac cycle that this device assists. _____________ Describe the status of the AV and SL valves during this phase_________

Solutions

Expert Solution

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD)  helps the bottom left chamber of the heart (left ventricle) pump blood out of the ventricle to the aorta and the rest of the body. Because left ventricles contract to pump the blood to the aorta and the rest of the body. This phase is included in ventricular systole of the cardiac cycle.

During ventricular systole ventricles contract due to which pressure rises, as a result, AV or atrioventricular valve closes down, to stop blood going back into the atria with a lubb sound and SL or semilunar valves open. This allows the blood to flow into the aorta and pulmonary trunk.

Blood flows through a ventricular assist device (a pump) at a rate of 100 mL/s. It enters at a pressure of 110 kPa, temperature 36.50°C, and speed 0.25 m/s. It leaves at 125 kPa, temperature 36.52°C, and speed 0.40 m/s. Heat transfer from the blood in the pump is negligible. The outlet is 40 mm above the inlet. (Note: the thermophyhsical properties of blood may be approximated by properties of liquid water at 37°C.) (a) Calculate the rate of work...

Standby power (sometimes called vampire power) is the power used by a device that is off but plugged in and in a standby mode. Regulations typically limit this power to 1 Watt. If electricity costs $0.10 per kilowatt-hour, then to the nearest order of magnitude, and assuming 1 Watt, how much does it cost to leave a device in standby mode for one year? (A) $0.01 (B) $0.10 (C) $1.00 (D) $10.00 (E) $100.00

In normal condition during ventricular systole, the left ventricle is the first to begin contracting, but the right ventricle is the first to expel blood. How can you explain this difference? There are two different reasons! And in dilated cardiomyopathy of the left ventricle, the ventricle can become enormously enlarged. Explain why this might lead to regurgitation of blood through the mitral valve (blood flowing from the ventricle back into the left atrium) during ventricular systole.
