Over the past few years, the Internet has been used by many companies to conduct all kinds of studies All over the world. Whether it be market or scientific research. The online survey has been a faster way to collect data from respondents in the survey than other survey methods such as the paper-and-pencil method and personal interviews. In addition to these benefits, web-based surveys also offer other pros and benefits for those who wish to conduct a survey. However, one should note the drawbacks and disadvantages of the online survey method.

Advantages of Online Surveys

1. Minimum cost

In traditional survey methods you have to spend thousands of dollars for a good result. On the other hand, studies show that conducting internet surveys facilitates low cost and fast data collection from the target population. Sending email questionnaires and other online questionnaires is more affordable than the face-to-face method.

2. Ease of data collection

The Internet is a vast virtual world that connects people from all walks of life. For this reason, a survey that requires a hundred or more respondents can be taken faster via the Internet. Survey questionnaires can be quickly deployed and completed by respondents, especially if some encouragement is given after their participation.

3. Flexibility of design

Complex types of surveys can be easily done through the internet. The questionnaire may have more than one response type which should not disappoint the respondent due to changes in the method of answering the questions.

4. Increase in response rate

The online survey provides the highest level of convenience for the respondents as they can answer the questionnaire according to their own speed, chosen time and preferences.

5. Automation in data input and handling

With online surveys, respondents are able to answer the questionnaire by inputting their answers while connected to the Internet. Thereafter, responses will be automatically stored in a survey database, reducing the chances of hassle-free handling of data and data error.

Disadvantages of Online Surveys

1. Survey fraud

The biggest disadvantage of online survey surveys is the scam. There are people who answer online surveys to get incentives (usually in the form of money) after the survey is completed, not with the desire to contribute to the progress of the study.

2. Absence of interviewer

Online surveys are not suitable for surveys that ask open-ended questions because respondents do not have trained interviewers to find answers.

3. Inability to reach challenging populations

This method does not apply to surveys that require respondents who do not have access to the Internet. Some examples of these respondents include the elderly and people living in remote areas.
