CRYPTOGENIC STROKE

Stroke or cerebrovascular accident is a sudden loss of functioning resulting from disruption of the blood supply to a part of the brain. Cryptogenic stroke is a type of stoke with an unknown etiology. Around 15-40% of all ischemic stroke are cryptogenic stroke.

ETIOLOGY

  • the cause of cryptogenic stroke is remains unknown

possible causes

  • cardiac embolism may lead to cryptogenic stroke
  • atrial fibrilation
  • patent foramen ovale
  • thrombophilia
  • aortic arch atheroma

RISK FACTORS

  • young people are at more risk of getting cryptogenic stroke than older people
  • patients who have atrial fibrilation

SYMPTOMS

  • numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg especialy one side of the body
  • face dropping
  • confusion or change in mental status
  • trouble speaking or understanding speaking [ slurred speech]
  • visual disturbances
  • difficulty in walking
  • dizziness or loss of balance coordination
  • sudden severe head ache
