In: Nursing
a patient with diabetes has been no since midnight for
surgery in the morning. he usually take an oral type 2 anti
diabetic drug to control his diabetes . what be the best action for
the nurse to take concerning the administration of his
medication?
Step 1
Endocrine system is a system which contains different glands which produces the hormones are essential for the metabolism of the organism and various other functions. For example thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones necessary for cellular metabolism. Pituitary gland produces growth hormones and many other essential for sexual reproduction also. Pancreas has an endocrine function of producing insulin hormone which is responsible for the glucose uptake into the cell. So, the levels of glucose in blood increases which causes a disorder called as Diabetes.
Step 2
A person is on oral medication for type 2 diabetes, and he did not eat anything from the midnight because of the restriction of oral feed before the surgery. In type 2 diabetes insulin is present but the cells are insensitivite to the insulin and doesn’t allow gluoce to eneter the cell and blood glucose level increases. Normally when we eat food blood sugar level increases. The person is on NO (no ORAL) from the midnight for the surgery. So he must take necessary supplement from the intravenous route. So, the nurse should check the blood sugar of the person as oral route is restricted the sugar values may flauctuate. So administering the medication in IV route after checking the blood sugar should be done by the nurse.
