PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.
Myocardial infarction occurs when the myocardial tissue is abruptly and severely deprived of oxygen. It results from prolonged imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand. Coronary artery disease results from the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary arteries which supplies oxygen to the myocardial tissue. Atherosclerosis means the accummulation of lipid containing plaque in the arteries. Formation of this plaque can result in the reduced flow of blood through the arteries which is known as ischemia. When ischemia occurs also the person may get symptoms similar to myocardial infarction like chest pain, breathing difficulty, palpitation, syncope etc. But in this case, infarction doesn't happens. Ischemia can lead to necrosis of myocardial tissue if blood flow is not restored. This is called infarction. Infarction occurs when coronary arteries are completely occluded due to atherosclerosis or thrombus formation. Acute myocardial infarction occurs due to sudden blockage of coronary arteries due to eruption or rupture of a vulnerable plaque which results in myocardial tissue damage.
