The physician ordered furosemide 2.5 mg/kg q8h for a child who weighs 28 lb. The safe dosage range is 3 to 6 mg/kg q8h, How many milligrams of furosemide should the nurse administer for each dose? Round to the nearest whole number.
The nurse shoud administer 33mg of Fursomide q8h(every 8th hourly) for the child.
The weight of the child is 28lb that means its 13 kg(1kg=2.2lb). So as per given data the dose is 2.5mg/kg q8h, so its 2.5*13=32.5 that means 33mg (nearest whole number).
The safe dosage is 3-6mg/kg q8h so its 39-78mg q8h for the child. Safe dosage means its the recommended dose which can be administered without much risk and side effects. Overdosage can lead to serious side effects which is also called as toxicity. In fursomide overdosage can lead to Dehydration, hypotension, electrolyte imbalance etc.
