An organization prepares strategies on the basis of its vision and mission statement and takes initiatives to drive the organization in a direction that can help them to achieve the goals. Here, the strategy has three levels. The first and top level is corporate level strategy that comes with the boarder plans as per the vision of the organization. Decision related to the expansion, selection of the market and the target audience are some of the examples of the initiatives taken up under the corporate level strategy. The business level strategy narrows the planning of the corporate level and it is spread to the different SBUs or divisional level. Here, the strategy is given an actionable shape so that organization can be readied to compete and create a presence in the market. The Functional level strategy takes initiatives to implement the strategy at the functional level that shows the results in the form of revenue, business development and market share.
There is a strong relation in all these three level of
strategies as there is one strategy and different layers
(corporate, business and functional) work differently, but in the
same direction to realize the strategy. When the three layers work
in coordination and collaboration with each other, they the
organization moves strategically and achieve the goals and
objective. It is the way, when value is created for the
organization. Besides, working of the three level of strategy in
one direction, brings efficient utilization of resources and
employees also get motivation to deliver their best performance. As
a result, the value as well as synergy is created within the
organization.
We can take the example of Microsoft entering into the market of
Mobile handset industry. The decision and planning of entry into
this industry and the market is taken up at the corporate level.
The business level strategy identified, the distribution network,
the product and the target audience. The functional level strategy
worked upon the plan decided by the business level and realized the
Microsoft mobile to be present & sold in the market.
