9. What urinalysis results indicate acute renal failure?
❑ Protein
❑ Cells
❑ Casts
❑ Specific gravity
❑ pH
❑ Glucose

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer: (C) Damage to tubules.

Reason: Presence of casts in urine indicates Renal damage. It does not indicates lower urinary tract damage. The casts are produced in Distal convoluted tubule, loop of henle and collecting ducts.

So as it indicates kidney damage, it indicates damage of tubules.

Options (A) and (C) are wrong because they are part of lower urinary tract and a cast doesn't indicates any problem of lower urinary tract

Option (D) is false because it is not a part of Renal system or urinary tract.

Question (9)

Answer: (a) Protein

Reason: Acute renal failure is indicated by the measurement of creatinine or Blood Urea Nitrogen. Because creatinine and blood urea nitrogen is very specific. These are pproteins filtered in nephrons.

Other options are not true because, even though they helps in identifying kidney problems as they are abnormal when kidney is damaged, they are not specific. Their abnormal increase can also be caused by other issues other than kidney damages also.
