Implications for therapeutic recreation in regards to substance- related disorders--

The therapeutic recreation seek to reduce stress which can trigger mood disorders like depression and anxiety caused by substance related diaorders.

By reducing an individual's stress, recreational therapy moderates neurotransmitter production in the brain which in turn reduce the risk of relapsing of the patient into substance abuse if they are going through addiction treatment.

Recreational therapies focus on the individual as a whole, with unique physical, emotional, cognitive, social, spiritual and environmental needs. Therapeutic recreation is often considered a holistic therapy and is applied with other kinds of behavioural therapy.
