  1. Your patient, a 22-year-old man, was involved in a motor vehicle accident and has spent a week in the ICU. He is restless, continually shedding his covers---even while being transported for diagnostic tests. Due to his condition, you have help in transporting him for his tests and engage in conversation regarding his evolving condition in the public elevator. While waiting for the scanner to be ready for him, the diagnostics nurse begins to ask questions regarding his condition while in the crowded, curtained holding area. After your clinical, you discuss your day of care in the nurses’ lounge while awaiting your classmates for your clinical wrap-up, using the patient’s room number as an identifier.
    1. What data in the scenario are pertinent?
    2. Applying what you know of patient privacy rights, were there potential violations committed in the case study? If so, outline the violations.
    3. How could the violations have been avoided?
    4. Were there actions committed in the case study that were successful in protecting the patient’s privacy rights? If so, what were they?

Solutions

Expert Solution

A)The act of the Diagnostic nurse and the act of sharing the patient's room number is the scenarios to be pertinent

B)The act of the diagnostic nurse is to be noted data, because as she is a nurse who diagnosis him she should need to know about his condition only by viewing his reports ,if not so she should discuss about his condition in private not before him as he is undergoing treament or among the crowd.

Discussing a patient's condition amoung classmates or colleagues is not a violation because it helps to improve the experience and knowledge but mentioning a particular patient's details such as name, room number, residential address or any other personal informaton is considered to be out of the ethics in nursing.

C)The diagnostic nurse should see the report of the patient to know about him instead of discussing his condition in the crowd and before him.

The condition of the patient discussed among the clasmates is not a violation but mentioning his room number is considered as a violation, mentioning his room number should have been avoided.

Because both the scenarios violates the patient's privacy rights.

D)Yes,Discussing his condition with classmates or other colleague ,before him or amoung the crowd is avoided and the discussion takes place in the nurses lounge room which is a gentle act.But It would be more gentle when the room number of the patient is not used as an identifier because sharing his condition without his personal details does not affects his privacy.Room number of a patient should be shared only in the necessary condition even with the colleagues.
