1) What types of glycosylation occur in ER vs. Golgi?
2) Why are proteins glycosylated?
3) What types of export occur from the Golgi?
- Under what circumstances are coat proteins used? And how does that help?
1. Glycosylation is the process of modification of Proteins and Lipids by addition of a Carbohydrate molecules. Glycosylation process is of two types N Linked and O Linked. N Linked Glycosylation takes place in ER with the help of enzyme Dolicol phosphatase whereas O linked Glycosylation takes place in Golgi complex.
2. In the process of Glycosylation a carbohydrate molecule is covalently attached to a target macromolecule, usually proteins and lipids. This modification of proteins and lipids ensures their efficient transportation.
3. Golgi apparatus is is involved in packaging, sorting and transferring of proteins secretion. Golgi complex also palys very important role in trnasportation of lipids around the ells.
4. Coat-proteins, lbuild small vesicles around the molecules to ensure efficient transfer of the molecules in the cells. Clathrin is one of the most common coat proteins present.
