Describe language development from birth on. Make sure to mention the critical time period, Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area
Language development is said to start early in life of a human being.As children from birth we start with making sounds and recognizing sounds,babbling and slowly pick up words and go on to make sentences.When children reach 15-18 months of birth ,they aquire language skills.From stage 0-6 motnhs a baby starts to understand speech,early sounds and noises,cooing noises and bubbly sounds.From 6-12 months babies start to recognize certain phrases,learning new words.
Wernicke's area is an area responsible for the language development. It is located on the temporal lobe on the left side of the brain.It is responsible for comprehension of speech.Wernicke's area is important for understanding written or spoken language.Damage to the wernicke's area will result in fluent aphasia ,where the person can fluently connect words but lack phrases with meaning.
The critical period is the stage where the nervous system is specially sensitive to certain stimuli.The critical period of hypothesis states that the first few years of life that constitue the language, develops readily and between age of five to puberty language acquisition is more difficult.Dr maria Montessori , one of the educators callled this a sensitive period.
Brocas area is the portion of the frontal lobe for speech production.Pierre Paul Broca discovered that language impairment was present in two patients after an injury.Broca's area plays a significant role in language comprehension and production.Stuterring is known to be associated with underactivity of Broca's area.
