In your opinion, which leadership style corresponds to increased nursing satisfaction/performance, leading to improved patient outcomes? Why?

LEADERSHIP STYLES .

Leadership is the interpersonal process that involves influencing others ( followers) to achieve goals.   The American Association Of Nurse Assessment Coordination ( AANAC) recognizes the following five nursing leadership styles as ;

  1. Transformational
  2. Democratic
  3. Laissez - Faire
  4. Autocratic
  5. Servant

The most effective leadership style in increased nursing satisfaction and improved patient outcomes is transformational. Because it has so many advantages when compared to other leadership styles.

TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN NURSING.

It is a management style that motivates employees to take ownership for their roles and perform beyond expectations. Instead of assigning tasks from the top ,transformational leadership teaches people how to think rather than just do what they are told. Sometimes called quiet leaders, they lead by example.

ADVANTAGES OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

  • Transformational leadership lowers turnover costs. (   Transformational leaders tend to retain employees more often than other forms of leadership. Those using this leadership seek to satisfy the needs of the organisation as they work to satisfy their personal needs simultaneously.
  • Transformational leaders understand relationships.  
  • The transformational leaders want to build a strong community within their base of followers at all times. This approach removes fragmented relationships that happen between employees, teams, or divisions.
  • It is a relationship which engages the full person.
  • Transformational leaders create enthusiasm. (Enthusiasm is contagious. When you see someone having a good time ,then you want to share that experience. It increases the productivity and higher levels of team morale. )
  • Transformational leaders ask the important questions.
  • Transformational leaders are excellent communicators.
  • It focuses heavily on ethics.
  • It encourages ongoing learning and development.
  • People are treated as individuals.

AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP.

* The leader or manager is focused and maintains strong control, makes decisions,and address all problems.

* The leader or manager dominates the group and commands rather than seeks suggestions or input.

DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP .

* This is also called participative management.

* It is based on the belief that every group member should have input into problem solving and the development of goals; leader obtains participation from group and then makes best decision for the organisation, based upon the input from the group.

LAISSEZ-FAIRE LEADERSHIP

* A laissez -faire leader or manager assumes a passive, nondirective ,and inactive approach and relinquishes part or all of the responsibilities to the members of the group.

* Decision making is left to the group, manager provide guidance, support, and feedback.

  SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Servant leadership in nursing implies that a leader naturally cares about ensuring each team member has the resources and tools that they need to succeed.

** It is one of the best style of leadership any leader can implement today.

** In a society where individuals are driven to achieve personal goals, a transformative leader comes in handy.
