Order is for a child to receive Amoxicillin 125 mg TID for 7 days. Available is a 75 mL bottle labeled Amoxicillin 250 mg per 5 mL. How many teaspoons will the child receive in 24 hours?
* Calculation of amount(teaspoons) of Amoxicillin the child will receive in 24 hrs.
Formula = Desired dose / Dose in hand * Quantity.
Here
Desired dose (D) = 125 mg TID for 7 days.
Dose in hand (H) = 250 mg.
Quantity (Q) = 5 ml.
As per formula
Amount of Amoxicillin the child will receive in 24 hr = D/H * Q
= 125 / 250 * 5
= 0.5 * 5
= 2.5 ml (TID).
Total amount required per day = 2.5 * 3
= 7.5 ml / day.
1 teaspoon = 5 ml.
So
Amount (teaspoon) required for the child
per 24 hours = 7.5 / 5
= 1.5 teaspoon.
