discuss domestic abuse. what is it? Are there different types of abuse? What are the symptoms?
Domestic Abuse involves violence or abuse in
many forms in a domestic setting such as a marriage, cohabition
relationship, or between two partners, etc. It can occur in same sex
relationships or heterosexual relationships. It usually occurs
between spouses but can be extended to abuse on children and the
elderly.
There are many different types of
abuse such as - physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, etc. It occurs
when a partner shows his/her physical dominance on the other by
fighting, hitting, choking, assaulting, beating, etc., or verbal
abuse such as using deragatory remarks., emotional abuse such as
blackmailing, etc, and sexual abuse such as marital rape. Studies
have shown that women are more susceptible to domestic abuse and in
some cultures and countries such abuse is even justified.
The symptoms of Domestic Violence can be
classified into:
i. Emotional/Behavioural Symptoms: This includes
anxiety, fear, panic attacks, feeling of helplessness and
hopelessness, nightmares, recurrent thoughts, feeling responsible
for the abuse, feeling that they deserve the abuse.
ii. Physical Symptoms: This includes headaches,
nausea, vomiting, asthma, insomnia, gastrointestinal pain,
etc.
Remember, one is never at fault for abuse. It is never okay to
abuse or be abused. Find help immediately. A person who has abused
once is likely to be abusive again.
