Prostate cancer is the carcinoma of prostate gland that may spread to other parts of the body particularly bones and lymph nodes.
Tests for prostate cancer in elderly men
PROSTATE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN BLOOD TEST
PSA protein specific antigen is a protin produced by prostate gland. In prostate cancer this level is inceased.PSA level should usually be below 2.5. If the PSA is too high there are chances for the cancer to spread beyond the gland.
Digital rectal examination
this method is useful in ruling out prostate enlargemnet caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia.
BIOPSY
This helps us to diagnose the presence of cancer cells in the prostate gland
MRI AND CT SCAN
It is useful to assess the extension of cancer into the bladder and lymph nodes for staging the cancer and to evaluate bone metastasis
All these methods are highly helpful in ruling out the protatic cancer in elderly men.
