Discuss the two major etiological theories of DID.
1) Claim - a one to two sentence thesis outlining your example.
2) Support - from an external source (i.e. not your textbook) defending your thesis. At least three discrete ideas or examples illustrating the cultural influence on the diagnosis or symptom presentation written in your own words.
3) Interpretation - 3-5 sentences drawing conclusions based on the support you provide. Use your example to explain why it is important to understand the cultural context in which a person experiences a mental illness.
1).DID is dissociative identity disorderor multiple personality disorder which is caused due to several factors like emotional or sexual abuse in childhood, neurobiological trauma exposure , family circumstances etc.Pschycodyanmic theory and neurodevelopment theory are the main two types of proposed theories for DID.
The psychodynamic theory says about how a person responds is based on his childhood experiences, interactions etc. For example the child may live in a world of imaginary friends when he is not sent for outdoor games with kids. Also when the kid didnt get much attention to what he say from his house during his childhood , the kd can go little inattentive. Similarly ego deelopment during play with other children if not corrected at the right time can turn into an aggresive behaviour.
The neurodevelopment theory focuses on a persons behaviour based on the trauma his brain received during chldhood. Persons with any slight mental impairens or amnesia falls under this category
2)The componentbmodeltheory and the sociocognitive theory defends the above two theories as they suggests that a persons behaviour can change during the growth phase due to the influence of the home circumstances as well the care givers suport.
3)No one theory can be considered as the best one as there limitations for each theory. Eventhough mebtal trauma is the most agreed etiology for the development of DID, there are many other factors that can contribute for the development of certain features like ego development, amnesia attachment o the caregiver etc which will misguide in diagnosing DID.
