Psychologists have discovered that human beings experience
several different states of consciousness during the course of a
day. For example, people have times when they are especially alert
and times when they are awake but not alert, often called
"daydreaming." Also, while people are asleep, they experience
different stages of sleep, each characterized by different patterns
of brain and bodily activity.
In a multi-paragraph essay, discuss the different states of
consciousness that you have experienced in the past 24 hours,
including any periods when you were asleep, alert, or
"daydreaming." Be sure to describe both the brain and bodily
activity you experienced during each state of consciousness.
Include information from class materials, readings, and research on
states of consciousness to support your discussion.
Consciousness is the awareness we have among ourselves in an environment. The states of consciousness are said to be associated with brain waves. One can record the brain only by using EEG(electroencaphelograph),which monitors electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp. The four important types of brain waves are alpha, beta, theta and delta each having a respective mental state.
Alpha being very relaxed and mediatating,Beta being awake and alert. Theta being lightly asleep, and Delta being deeply asleep.Sleep is one of the states of counsciouness and we are awake when in sleep our brain and our body continues to do its work.Sleep helps a person to restore energy and buliding of body tissues that are repaired or used during the day.
There are several cycles of sleep, each lasting 90-100 minutes.we have 1,2,3,4 and REM. They enter into the satge one whihc is few minutes, and second stage lasts 20 minutes, and then slow wave sleep into third and fourth stage which is about 30 minutes.REM(rapid eye movement) is the stage of deep sleep where brain activity resembles that of an alert person.Dreams happen in other stages but are more clear in the REM stage.REM stage gets longer and other stages get shorter as the night goes.
In consciousness we are aware of our own internal states and evnets or convesation happening around us.Dreaming involves a state from actual sleep. When we say daydreaming the dreamer is aware about what he is dreaming. He is not in any stage of asleep. We have different levels of consciousness, conscious level, non conscious level, pre conscious level ,subconscious level, and unconscious level.
Sigmun Frued a psychologist interpretation of dream analysis is that it is a way to uncover information in the unconscious mind,in dreams we act our unconscious desires.
