Hypoglycemia occurs when the blood glucose level falls below 70 mg/dl or when the blood glucose level drops rapidly from an elevated level.Hypoglycemia is caused by too mch insulin or oral hypoglycemic agenys too little food or excessive activity.
The clients needs to be instructed alwaays to carry some form of fast acting simple carbohydrate with him or her.
Consume 10 to 15g of a fast acting simple carbohydrate such as glucose tablets,3 graham crackers,4 sugar cubes, 8oz low fat milk and so on.Retest the glucose level in 15 minutes and repeat the treatment if symptoms does not resolve.
The principal physiological action of glycagon is to increase bloogd glucose level when it falls below normal .The level of blood glucose controls secretion of glucagon and insulin. The liver palys an essential role in reglutaion of glucose level.Low blood glucose stimulates release of glucagon from alpha cells of the pancreatic islets.Glucagon acts on hepatocytes (liver cells) to accelerate the conversion of glycogen into glucose and pomotion of glucose from lactic acid and certain aminoacids. As a result heptocytes release glucose into the blood more rapidly and blood glucose rise.Insulin screated from beta cells of the pancreatic islets.Insulin acts on various cells in the body like, speed conversion of glucose into glycogen, slow gluconeogenesis and so on.If the low blood glucose level continues to fall ,low blood glucose inhibits release of insulin.
