1. In a country there are 20,000,001 Conservatives and 19,000,001 Liberals and 1 moderate. The liberals are at one end of the spectrum, the moderate in the middle and the conservatives at the other. Three people run for president, a conservative, the moderate and a liberal. The country uses a voting method where candidates are not allowed to vote. So the positions of the 39M voters and 3 candidates are shown below, left to right. Voters prefer candidates close to their own positions.

Candidates       Libbie                              Moddie                               Connie

                             X____________________X__________________X

   Voters           19M                                         0                                      20M

The voting method they use, whatever it is, chooses the compromise candidate Moddie. Thank heavens!   Did their voting method choose a Condorcet winner? Explain in a sentence.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Yes, their voting method chose a condorcet winner. This is because according to the condorcet method the voter marks 1 for their first preference and 2 for their second preference and 3 for their third preference. Out of the three markers, whichever marker has the highest frequency will be judged the winner.

           Libbie                        Moddie                   Connie

Libbie                 1                                2                               3

Moddie               2 or 3                         1                               2 or 3

Connie                3                                2                               1

According to the above votes it is clear that the Moddie gets most prefered votes with least against votes.
