With File Shredder you can remove files from your hard drive without fear they could be recovered. There are quite a few software tools today for retrieval of deleted files under Windows Operating System’s. Those tools, often referred to as "file recovery" software, are taking advantage of shortcoming of Windows "delete" command that we all use regularly to delete files. Actually, the "delete" operation in Windows only removes bits of information from files so they appear deleted in OS. It is easy to retrieve those files using aforementioned specialised file recovery software. So it completely deletes the file from the system.

In order to remove, or shred files permanently from your system you have to use a program that is capable of rewriting the files with random series of binary data multiple times. This process is often called shredding. That way, the actual content of the file has been overwritten and the possibilities to recover such a shredded file are mostly theoretical. A list of simple commands (such as Add File[s] and Add Folder[s]) let you browse and choose the items you wish to remove; selected items are listed in the large pane that makes up the bulk of the interface. In our tests, configuring File Shredder's settings was simple, and we were able to choose from five options for shredding algorithms, ranging from simple one pass to DoD 5220-22.M to Guttman algorithm with 35 passes.

File shredders work by overwriting the file first before carrying out the actual delete. One of the most basic methods is to completely overwrite the file with bit values of zero. If someone was to look at the raw data after this all they would see are values of zero instead of the original contents of the file.
