Fibuch, E. E. (2011). Failure of senior leadership: Is this a problem in your hospital? Physician Executive, 37(2), 46‐50. The article looks at the reasons behind failed leadership in the context of health care organizations in the U.S. It provides stages of derailment of senior leadership including the leader's failure to be self-aware of themselves and others, pride and arrogance and missing the warning signs from feedback on their declining performance. It lists the most common leadership shortcomings which include lack of enthusiasm, lack of clear vision and direction and having poor judgment.
The failed leadership in the health organization is due to an unethical act of a leader. The alternate leader in an organization should be discussed with the unethical act. The senior leader should act as a problem solver and not as a problem. Leadership skills and continuing education is important for a competent leader. A healthy work environment is also important for the effective leadership of an organization. The senior leader should support and assist the subordinate employees.
The EHR system is challengeable to the senior leadership. The leader should assess the strength and weakness of the EHR implementation. The leader should assess the critical areas and to manage the workload effectively. The leader should work towards the Organizational goals, values, and the missions. The Organization has to reorganize the policies and goals. Failure of leadership is due to failure of reorganization. Lack of communication within the organization also leads to leadership failure. The Organization should support the leaders to implement the policies and goals. The inconsistent documentation of a report is also lead to problems in leadership. Disruptive healthcare professional and the nurse-physician relationship is critical to managing the patient care. Maintaining staff relationship and continuing patient care is an important element in the healthcare organization. Having coordination and collaboration among the staff members is the important characteristics in the healthcare system. The management should perform necessary corrections in the management leadership. Risk assessment should be assessed properly. The leader should have good qualities for the effective leadership.
