Describe one example each of negative and positive feedback in hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle. Be sure to detail the major functions of the hormones and structures involved.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Estrogen, FSH and LH controls the menstrual cycle. Estrogen controls the secreton of 2 pituitary hormone by acting on hypothalamus. When the level of estrogen rises in blood, it will stimulate pituitary to secrete more or less LH and FSH.

In negative feedback mechanism, rising level of hormone feedback to the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to decrease the production of hormone. In case of positive feedback rising level of hormone will feedback to increase hormone production. In most of menstrual cycle estrogen and progesterone provide negative feedback and during 12 to 14 days estrogen provide positive feedback to the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

- Major functions of menstrual hormones:

Menstrual cycle is regulated by LH and FSH. They are produced by pituitary gland, promote ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone, which stimulate the uterus and breast to prepare for the fertilisation.
