Acetone, the solvent in many nail polish removers, has a density of 0.791 g/mL. What is the volume, in mL, of 38.2 g of acetone?An automobile gasoline tank holds 31.0 gal when full. How many pounds of gasoline will it hold if the gasoline has a density of 0.737 g/mL?
Answer –
We are given, density of acetone = 0.791 g/mL, mass of acetone = 38.2 g
We need to calculate volume of the acetone and we know the formula
density = mass / volume
So, volume = mass / density
= 38.2 g / 0.791 g.mL-1
= 48.29 mL of acetone
In the next problem we are given, volume of gasoline = 31.0 gal , density = 0.737 g.mL-1
First we need to convert the given volume gal to mL
We know,
1 gal = 3785.41 mL
So, 31.0 gaql = ?
= 117348 mL
We know formula,
density = mass / volume
mass = density * volume
= 0.737 g.mL-1 * 117348 mL
= 86485.3 g
Now we need to convert the mass g to pound (lb)
1 g = 0.002205 lb
86485.3 g = ?
= 191 lb
