The University is trying to decide whether to implement a mandatory remedial math course for students with low test scores upon admissions. Historically, students with low admissions test scores have failed their first math course 61% of the time. A random sample of students with low scores is selected and assigned to a remedial math course. These students are tracked and it is found that 102 out of 175 of them still fail their first regular math course.

            If the hypotheses are

            H0: p = 0.61    HA: p < 0.61

            what is the p-value for this test?

Solutions

Expert Solution

We have for given example,
Population proportion value is =0.61
x=102

n=175

Estimate for sample proportion =0.5829

Z test statistic formula for proportion

=-0.74

P value =0.2297.....................by using Z table or Excel for left tailed test =NORMSDIST(-0.74)

A researcher conducts a study of college students to decide whether they like math classes. They get a list of students with land-line phone numbers from their University and call the first 25 students, all of whom are English majors, on the list. They ask those students “Which is the worst class you’ve had on campus – your math class or another class?” 18 out of 25 say math, so the researcher concludes that students choose English majors because they...

In math course of this semester, there are 26 students and six of them are women. (a) How many ways are there to select a group of four students from math course students so that there is at least one women in the group? (b) If I randomly select a group of four, what is the probability that the group has women only? (c) I randomly choose a group of four out of 26 students. Then, again, I choose randomly...

. The learning styles of students in a university biology course were measured and the students were divided into two groups depending on their propensity towards visual learning (style 1) versustext-based learning (style 2). Severalteaching interventions aimed at visual learners were introduced into the course and the instructors scored the students as to whether or not they showed learning gains compared to the usual text-based materials. The results are given in the table below. Conduct a Chi-square analysis to determine...

A company is trying to decide whether to bid for a certain contract or not. They estimate that merely preparing the bid will cost $10000.If their company bids, then they estimate that there is a 50% chance that their bid will be put on the “short-list;” otherwise their bid will be rejected. Once “short-listed” the company will have to supply further detailed information (entailing costs estimated at $5000). After this stage their bid will either be accepted or rejected. The...

You are trying to decide whether to take a vacation. Most of the costs of the vacation (airfare, hotel, and forgone wages) are measured in dollars, but the benefits of the vacation are psychological. How can you compare the benefits to the costs? Compare the airfare and hotel costs of the vacation to the foregone wages. Determine the benefits of what you give up by going on the vacation, and compare them to the benefits of going on the vacation....
