1. Can there be such a thing as an AC battery? Explain.

2. If an AC voltmeter reads 42.0-V, what is the peak value of the time-varying voltage?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) No, There are no Ac batteries. Because we can't stote ac.For that let's Know what's AC and DC.

AC: Alternating Current, its name suggests its direction changes with time . i.e. it has positive as well as negative half cycles. So, Ac has frequency as we know 50 Hz or 40 Hz. It means its direction changes 50 or 40 times in one second.

DC: Direct current or unidirectional current whose direction is not changed.

  • If we have Ac with 50 Hz , hence 50 times its + and - vein one second. But battery can't change it terminals with same speed.
  • secondly during positive half cycle (Battery is nothing but Capacitor) Capacitor is charged while negative half cycle it's Discharged Hence Power is Zero. So we can't store AC.

So finally we don't have Ac battery but A Dc battery or DC power( DC voltage and DC current) can be be converted into AC.

2) if Ac voltmeter reads 42 V means it measured RMS voltage. ( Root Mean square )

VP = VRMS × √2

Vp= 42×√2 V = 59.3970 V
