Expert Solution

Pharmacokinetics

It is a branch of pharmacology. It is the study of how body affect the drug. Pharmacokinetics properties are affected of route and dose of drug administered as it affect the absorption rate of the drug. One of the model which explains the phases of pharmacokinetics called multi compartment model (LADME). It includes,

Liberation- The process of release of drug from the pharmaceutical formulation

Absorption- The process of substance entering into a blood circulation

Distribution- The dispersion of substances through out the fluid and tissues of the body

Metabolism- The process of Irreversible transformation of parents compounds into daughter metabolites

Excretion- The process of removal of substance from the body

Pharmacodynamics

It is a branch of pharmacology. It is the study of how drug affect the body It deals with the mechanism of action of the drug. The basic classification of mechanism of action includes,

1. Stimulation

2. Depression

3. Irritation

4. Replacement

5. Cytotoxic action

Pharmacodynamic properties are affected by the route and dose of drug administered. Pharmacodynamics concepts include,

Affinity- It is the attraction between the drug and receptor

Efficacy- Drug's ability to activate the receptor once it has bound to it

Potency- The amount of drug necessary to bring desired effect

Agonist/Antagonist

Desired effect / undesired side effects

Discussion: Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics As an advanced practice nurse assisting physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, it is important to not only understand the impact of disorders on the body, but also the impact of drug treatments on the body. The relationships between drugs and the body can be described by pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Pharmacokinetics describes what the body does to the drug through absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, whereas pharmacodynamics describes what the drug does to the...

Pharmacokinetics is the study of the rates of absorption and elimination of drugs by organisms. In most cases, elimination is slower than absorption and is a more important determinant of the availability of a drug for binding to its target. For example, consider the elimination of beta blockers used to treat hypertension. After intravenous administration, the concentration of residual drug in the blood plasma of a patient was monitored and the data are shown in the following table. Time (min)...
