In the US such an association is very typically a nonprofit organization mainly for the tax purposes
The main roles of the professional associations have been variously defined as : "A specific group of people in a learned profession who are entrusted with maintaining oversight or control of the legitimate practice of the profession. It is also a body that is acting "to safeguard the people interest organizations which specifically "represent the interest or the likes of the professional practitioners," and so "specifically act to maintain or sustain their own privileged as well as powerful position as a controlling body.In the United Kingdom, the Science Council specifically defines a professional body as "an organisation with citizen members practicing an occupation or profession in which the organisation specifically maintains an oversight of the skills, knowledge ,practices as well as conduct , of that occupation". The Quality Assurance Agency distinguishes between regulators and the statutory bodies that "have specific powers that is mandated by the Parliament to regulate an occupation or a collection of professions and protect the usage of occupational titles" and professional bodies which "are all independent membership organisations that look over the activities of a particular occupation and specifically represent the interests of members of the group " and which "may specifically offer certification or registration of unregulated professions on a voluntary basis.
Most of the professional organizations of the global scope are specifically located in the US. The United States of America has often led the transformation of various occupations into specific professions, that is a process that described in the academic literature as professionalization.
Many professional bodies are specifically involved in the accrediting degrees as well as , defining and also examining the skills and competencies that are very well necessary to practice a person, as well as granting professional certifications to indicate that a person has qualified in the subject area he is specifically working on .
