Clay is a 24 year old, 6 feet, 220 pound, sedentary male. Diet analysis revealed Clay's average caloric intake for three days was 6000 calories and he's maintaining his current body weight. He's also averaged 900 grams of carbohydrate, 166 grams of fat, and 226 grams of protein for that three-day period. Clay used to rodeo and is a fairly strict vegetarian, spanning the spectrum of vegan to lactovegetarian to lacto-ovo-vegetarian depending on his current mood. He also avoids alcohol and various forms of tobacco. His vitamin B12 intake averaged 0.24 ?g/day. Clay's recommendation for B12 is 2.4 ?g/day.

Clay has some money to spend and wants to invest in some protein powder and creatine (it's about $75.00 for a 6 pound tub unless he can find a good coupon). Would you recommend he spend his money on this supplement? Why or why not?

You recommend Clay consume a diet that emphasizes a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, nuts, some milk and some meat. He doesn’t think that sounds very fun and no one is talking about this kind of boring diet. He is thinking about adapting the Paleo Diet or the New Atkins Diet. How do you convince him otherwise?

Expert Solution

A ) Clays weight in pounds= 220 lbs (99.7 kg)

Total protein requirement of his body (Recommended protein intake is 0.8gm/kg) = 99.7*0.8 = 79.76 grams.

Total protein intake of Clay for three days is = 226 grams

Protein in take in one day = 226/3= 75.3 grams.

Clay''s intake of protein is 4 grams less than the recommended protein intake of the body. This amount can be substituted by dietary intake rather than protein powder. Excessive intake of protein will result in increase creatinine resulting in renal shutdown. Moreover, these protein powder are synthetic and artificial products which cannot be substituted with natural product unless its protein requirement is high. So i will not recommend to spend his money on this supplement.

B) The Paleo and Atkins diet are not scientifically proven diet for weight control. Although they offer sufficient vitamins and nutrients but their side effects are found. The cost of such foods are high. Even though its fun to start up but it often becomes boring soon as its diet habits are very strict. People tend to regain weight fast once they move back to carbs. These are some drawbacks that can be suggested to Clay in order to convince him to adopt the earlier mentioned diet plan.
