Case Study Scenario: A 58-year-old woman from Mexico was visiting her family in the United States when she fell and fractured her hip, requiring surgical repair. It is her first postoperative day. She does not speak English and her adolescent grandson is staying with her to serve as translator. It is time for the nurse to perform care for the patient and her indwelling urinary catheter.

  1. How can the nurse be sensitive to the woman’s privacy without causing embarrassment to the patient or her grandson?
  2. Identify the various cultures each patient might belong to, in addition to race/ethnicity.

Answer: In this case, the nurse need to provide care to the patient by providing cultural competence environment. Nurse need to explain the things to the translator so that patient can understand easily. The nurse need to provide care to the patient by asking the grandson of the patient to stay outside for a while druing the cleaning procedures.

There could be many patients that belongs to the other cultures such as African American people. The other could be the patients from the arabs that follow the other tradition.

The patient age is 58 years and hence requires more care. At this age, the women's body becomes weak and hence requires attention. The nurse need to indulge in providing age based and evidence based care to the patient. As at this stage, the pharmacological as well as pharmacokinetic action differs as compared to young patient.

The patient's culture causes barrier in the communication, it als increases concern regarding the traditional values. It is important to provide cultural competence environment to the patient.
