Direct democracy or pure democracy is where everyone citizen directly decides on every aspect of the government. In direct democracy, people decide on policies without any intermediary. Depending on the particular system in use, direct democracy might entail passing executive decisions like security, the use of sortition, making laws, directly electing or dismissing officials, and conducting trials.Direct democracy makes decisions by majority rule. It happens in a plebiscite or referendum.

Representative or Indirect Democracy is where elected officials are chosen to represent people in a community which the United States uses. Elections may be won by plurality or majority or some other way. In theory other methods, such as allotment (selection by a lottery) could be used instead. Also, representatives sometimes hold the power to select other representatives, presidents, or other officers of government (indirect representation).

In a democracy the ultimate power to decide significant electoral system reforms lies with the people.Democrats regard that basic capacity as the best protection against bad government and the abuse of power.
