ou are treating a patient who has an established history of RA, coming to you with complaints of increased pain. The patient’s current, daily treatment consists of Motrin 400 mg tid and an occasional ASA throughout the day.
What are your thoughts on the patient’s current treatment? What, if any, treatment changes would you initiate?
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder which is characterized by swollen joints with stiffness and pain. Motrin is a nonsteroidal antinflammatory drug used to treat inflammation and reduce pain. Aspirin is also used to treat pain. NSAID and aspirin can help RA patient but there are possible side effects . Consumption of Vitamin-C and Omega -3 fatty acids rich foods may help in repairing and growth of tissues to reduce pain. Physical therapy can be recommended with transcutaneous electrical stimulation and range of motion exercises. Assistive devices usage can be introduced to the patient.Check whether patient has osteoarthritis too.
Counselling and meditation can be provided.
Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are a group of medications commonly used in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. For example Methotrexate,Sulphasalazine,Antimalarials like chloroquine. Intraarticular Injections corticosteroids may help in chronic pain. Last therapy is surgery .
