Using the flip chart on page 17, brainstorm to create your own list of characteristics of what would be a good death and bad death for you, compare list and answer these questions a) Did anyone's list surprise you? b) How might you adapt care to help meet individual preferences? Refer to dignity question on page 42 in the text. Then imagine that you are dying. What does the health care team need to know about you to give you the best care possible?
Death: there are two type of death. They are clinical death, biological death. In clinical death, the hearts stops its beat and circulation is impaired and death occurs. Biological death is degeneration of tissue and cells. Brain death, in which there is no supply of blood to brain, causing pupil dilation even though heart beats slightly. There are another forms of death, that is natural death, unnatural death.
CHARCTERSTICS OF DEATH: the characteristics of bad death is inability of an individual to cope with negative emotions that aroused in the time of death and that leads to unsatisfactory of death and restlessness where as Good death is ability of an individual to cope with symptoms in the times of death and leads to satisfactory death and getting peaceful and calm in the times of death.
Good death is like dying in dying quietly, in sleep, sudden death without pain, with respect, Family involvement, and good control of symptoms
Bad death is like an accident, with more pain, chronic living with illness, without dignity, unable to control of symptoms, peace less, being young
B. patient are different and their back ground is different in culture, customs, and beliefs. Some patient might keep dying information themselves in the family and only close relatives. In Some culture, some of the patient culture might need to have holy water in the times of dying. Some patient prefers to die at home or any other places. Preference mostly depends on the types of illness, care, resources. Some might ask his son or daughter with him at the times of death. In the time of dying, family member may keep constant vigilance
Health care provider need to know
1. The health care provider must understand stages of grief and death. Then only she can provide best care as possible
2. The nurse must understand what are symptoms and changes during the times of dying
3. Health care provider should know about patient cultural preference. Then only, they can provide culturally competent care in the time of dying
4. Health care provider must know dignity of patient. Health care provider can provide respect while giving care
5. Health care provider must understand emotional needs of the patients and trying to pacify the patient
6. They must know regarding dying process and then help the patient and family in the time of dying
7. Health care provider must identify choices of family and patient regarding dying
8. Health care provider respect the patient’s rights and trying to work to maintain patient’s rights
9. Health care provider need to consider regarding the ethical considerations and quality of life issues
10. The health care provider must know legal issues and needs of the patient
11. The healthcare provider must relieve anxiety and fear of patient by administering medication and teaching relaxation technique
12. Health care provider must alleviate the physical pain as it may occur in cancer and relieve shortness of breath by administering oxygen, positing, comfortable measure
13. The health provider must listen and shows empathy in the time of dying
14. Health care provider must respect the choices of patient regarding place of death
