Virginia Henderson
Virginia Avenel Henderson was an influential nurse, theorists, researcher and author. She gave the famous definition for nursing "The unique function of a nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death )that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. Henderson started her career as a public health nurse in 1921.Later she worked as a nurse educator and researcher. She travelled worldwide to help and encourage nurses and other health professionals. She authored the revised edition of Bertha Harmers textbook of principle and practice of nursing. She developed the major nursing theory Henderson's model which is used throughout the world to standardizing nursing practice. She directed a twelve year project The nursing studies index. Her work credited shifting focus of nursing research. She died in 1996 at the age of 98 years.
