b. A cue is something in the environment that can be used for information by an individual but the information produced does not have a specific purpose

c. A cue provides multimodal information

d. A signal requires a sender and a receiver, in which the sender incurs a cost to produce the signal conveying specific information

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • A signal is a perceivable behaviour or feature that have evolved and has acquired the specific charecteristic of conveying information about the signaler or the signaler's environment.
  • A signal can be produced in a variety of environments using different modes of communicaton. Signals are used to express qualities like stregth, honesty, genetic rodustness, poisionusness etc. We rely on signals when direct evaluation of the quality is too difficult or dangerous. For eg; a bird wants to know if the butterfly it is about to eat is poisonous before it takes a bite, and relies on the signal of wing markings to decide whether to eat or move on.
  • A signal always needs a sender and a reciever.
  • A cue is any feature that an organism can use as a guide to display a particular behaviour or series of behaviour.
  • The mosquito seeking a mammal to bite and flying up wind when it detects CO2. Here CO2 is present in the air as a result of repiration and other proccesses, but for the mosquito its informatory.
  • A cue provides a multimodal information. For variety of organisms a cue can give information according the specific conditions. .

By analsyng the statements given above all the above given above are true regarding signals and cues.
