Facebook was recently questioned by congressional members over paid campaign ads from the 2016 Presidential election. Should Cambridge Analytica be investigated? Should Facebook users be informed of how their information is being used and why?

In the given case, data was being mined from Facebook under a false impression of academic research by Kogan which allegedly sold the information to Cambridge Analytical and in connection to the campaign ads from president Donald Trump's 2016 presidential election, the information has been suspected to have been used in the same. Facebook noted that Kogan had violated privacy and therefore demanded Kogan and Cambridge Analytical to delete the said data. Since the data was not permitted to be used outside Facebook or in the academic research, it would mean that Cambridge Analytical should be investigated in their role in the presidential campaign and the use of that data. Facebook users are explained in a privacy policy and data policy where their data is being used and how Facebook uses the data, therefore, if such an incident occurs, the users should be informed about such a breach of data due to ethics and policies that are in and therefore would not damage Facebook's reputation either.
