• Bradykinin is a potent nonapeptide which can induce inflammation.
• Both, pharmacologically as well as physiologically, it belongs to peptides of the kinin proteins group.
• It dilate arterioles by releasing prostacyclin, nitric oxide and endothelium derived hyperpolarizing factor and constrict veins by releasing prostaglandin F2.
• It is an endothelium dependent potent vasodilator and mild diuretic in nature which may reduce blood pressure level.
• In bronchus and gut, it causes non-vascular smooth muscles contraction, increases vascular permiability and also mediate pain.
• Constriction and eventual blockade of many other fetal vessels, including the umbilical arteires and veins, is also mediated by bradykinin.
• Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are a drug belonging to antihypertensive drugs class which increases level of bradykinin by preventing it's degradation thus amplifying it's blood pressure lowering effect.
• ACE inhibitors are used for the treatment of hypertension and heart failure.
• In patients treated with ACE inhibitors, it causes dry cough.
