The terms consideration and initiating structure emerged from the Ohio State studies. Explain what these terms mean in relationship to leadership.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The research was base on questionnaires to leaders and subordinates. These are known as the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LDBQ) and the Supervisor Behavior Description Questionnaire (SDBQ).

Consideration is the people-orientation and Initiating Structure is the task orientation.

Consideration

Consideration is the degree to which a leader acts in a friendly and supportive manner towards his or her subordinates.

This factor is oriented towards interpersonal relationships, mutual trust and friendship.

This leadership style is people-oriented.

Some of the statements used to measure this factor in the LBDQ are:

  1. being friendly and approachable
  2. treating all group members as his/her equal
  3. looking out for the personal welfare of group members
  4. making him/herself accessible to group members

Initiating Structure

This is the degree to which a leader defines and structures his or her role and the roles of the subordinates towards achieving the goals of the group.

This leadership style is task-oriented.

Some of the statements used to measure this factor in the LBDQ are:

  1. letting group members know what is expected of them
  2. maintaining definite standards of performance
  3. scheduling the work to be done
  4. asking that group members follow standard rules and regulations.
