self Concept

Self concept is the way people think about theselves. It is unique , dynamic and always evolving . This mental image of oneself influeces a persons identity , self esteem , body image and role in society. Self concept shapes and defines who we are, the decisions we make, and the relationship we form, it is the basics for all motivated behavior.

  • Component of self concept
  1. Ideal self : the person would like to be.
  2. Real self : How the person really thinks about himself
  3. Public self : what the person thinks others think of him.

A persons self concept is composed of evolving subjective conscious and unconscious self assessments. Physical attributes, occupation, knowledge and abilities of the person will change throughout the life span, contributing to changes in one's self concept.

  • Factors that may alter an older person's self concepts :

A person's self concept is continually developing during each life stage and is closely linked to their emotional and social development. The image that you have of yourself today will not be same that you reflect on when you are 40, 60 or 80 Years old.

Physical , intellectual, emotional and social changes will effect self concept over time. Low self confidence, negative self talk will also effect on self concept as well as self esteem. In later years the person facing many issues related to health , fitness or disability therefore , illness , injury and aging can lead to the alteration in self esteem . Additional alterations may include pregnancy, loss of job, retirement or death of a significant other . Individuals who view these alterations negatively are at risk for ineffective role performance and a decreased self esteem.

  • Another aspects :
  • Not having decision making power
  • Do not have access to information and resources
  • Loneliness
  • Negative self image
  • Age: a person's physical features, their clothes, and their non verbal behavior will influence on their self esteem .
  • Appearance : as we get older , appearances and the way we present ourselves tend to have less impact on our self concept.
  • Gender stereotypes
  • Discrimination
  • Personal and working relationships
  • Abuse

These are such things which may alter self concept and may influence negatively their self esteem.
