summarize the four messages outlined in the iom report and explain why these are significant to nursing practice?
Four messages outlined in the IOM report
1-Nurses should practice to the full extend of their education and training(.As per the findings majority of nurses are working in acute care settings. Most of they become health coaches, care coordinators, health care leaders etc.In this era the advancement of technology seems to be pushing nurses even farther away from patients. The documentation side is highly challenging,so the nurses will not get much time in patient care.Lack of supplies and equipments and time consuming for obtaining supplies to perform the task-all will reduce the time devoted for direct patient care.Majority of time being consumed by documentation and endorsement. For better patient care the nurses require a practice environment either in hospital or in community to the full extend of their education, skills and competencies.)
2-Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. The demand for nurses are increasing day by day all over the world.A variety of challenges limit the ability to ensure a well educated nurse work place. The education system should provide certain tools to evaluate the quality and standard of patient care by preserving ethics ,holistic and compassionate approaches. The education is not supposed to stop after receiving a degree.Continuing education and in service education programmes are very importat to keep the nurses update and for effective nursing care to the patient.
3-Nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals in redesigning health care in the united states.A well educated well experienced and qualified nurse can perform many roles like administrative positions, front line educator, health policy roles as well as partners in health care redesign.Nurses should have a voice in health policy decision making. They are also involved in advisory committees, commissions and boards where policy decisions are made to improve patient care.
4-Effective work place planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure.Nurses do not function invaccum.Planning for the fundamental changes required to achieve a reformed health care system.Aclear understanding of the contributions of various health professionals and health care work force are required to accomplish that.Major gaps exist incurrently available work force data. These gaps hamper the overall health care system.
The above mentioned four points are the key points of IOM.These points are important to improve the patient care as well as to maintain the standard of nursing care.
