Evolution of Nursing practices over time:

During the 20th century, the field of nursing has changed tremendously and has acheived various milestones. They advanced in the areas of education, practice, research and technology.

During the start of nursing, nurses used to study from their mother or other women in the same profession. They weren't much respected. But now there are specialised training programs and educational courses which develops a nurse.

In the earlier generation the main area for a nurse to work were home or in the war zones due to constant wars rhat were happening then, now the medical setting has changed to clinics, hospitals or doctors office for nurses.

The responsibilities have also changed drastically, where it was home care in the beginning to controlling each and every aspects of every patient in the hospital of work place. Doctors used to control all the patients without any nurses in early time which now cmhas changed and nurses looks after everything.

Like these nursing has changed a lot and has evolved.

Some key leaders and events which developed nursing:

  • The first person to be remembered while talking about key leaders is Miss Florence Nightingale. She believed that nursing should be a separate career. She worked for it and acheived it. She msde major reforms in the field of nursing like introduction of hygiene, sanitation, and nursing practice during crimean war.
  • In 1813, Ladies benevolent society of Charleston initiated a program to nurse sick poor at home which took nursing care to a deepr level
  • Jensey Snow, a slave opened a hospital in Petersberg is a notable reform
  • In 1838, the first trained nurses, the five irish sisters of charity, arrived in sydney for their work
  • In 1881, American Red Cross was established by Clara Barton
  • 1861, nurse began to wear uniform
  • In 1860, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing opened in London
  • The first textbook by a nurse, A textbook of Nursing by Clara S. Weeks was published in 1885
  • 1893, Howard University opened a nursing eduction program, the first program as a university setting.
