Aayan is an 89-year-old man who was recently admitted to a long-term care facility due to progression of Alzheimer’s disease. He has been at the LTC for three weeks and has lost four pounds. You review the patient’s chart which states that the patient has poor p/o intake and has little interest in eating. Upon further investigation, you find out that Aayan follows Muslim dietary rules, but due to his cognitive impairment he was unable to disclose this information at admission. You review the menu for yesterday:

Breakfast: 1 hot tea Jello Banana

Lunch: Apple juice Chicken sandwich (not correctly prepared according to halal rules)

Dinner: Apple juice Roast pork with potatoes

a) Which of the foods were inappropriate to serve based on Aayan's religious practices?

b) Which of the following are culturally appropriate in regard to Mulism dietary practices?

- proper methods must be used for slaughtering. - pork is not allowed

- meat&poultry cannot be eaten for 30 mins after dairy products

- alcohol is not allowed - eggs are not allowed

- shrimp is not allowed

c) Choose one construct based on the campinha-bacote model of cultural competence in healthcare delivery to describe how you could educate the team on how to provide better care to Aayan

Solutions

Expert Solution

a- First let us talk about the word Halal. Halal means allowed or permissible which means the food that is allowed in Muslim religion (generally) to eat.

Since the Chicken Sandwich is not correctly prepared according to halal rules, therefore it was inappropriate to serve him.

b- Yes, it is true that proper methods must be used for slaughtering and pork is not Halal.

No, it is not true that meat&poultry cannot be eaten for 30 mins after dairy products.

Yes, it is true that alcohol is not allowed but eggs are allowed.

No, it is not true that shrimp is not allowed. Shrimp is allowed.

So the answer is the first option.

c-  I will educate the team on how to provide better care to Aayan by instructing them following things-

1- Make and serve food according to the Halal rules.

2- Be sure that the food that is being served to Aayan is a correct and balanced diet.

3- The food should be rich in vegetables, fruits and proteins.
