Consider the system of a motorcycle + car. The motorcycle crashes
and sticks into the initially stationary car, pushing it
horizontally. After the crash the motorcycle and the car both slide
to a halt together. Even though the system is not closed /isolated,
the momentum of the collision is approximately conserved during the
collision. Why is that?
If an object hits another object and Sticks together and the momentum is conserved then the collision is totally inelastic. In totally inelastic condition the final velocity of the two objects is same. In this case, the motorcycle hits the car and sticks together and they are slide together with the same velocity. In this case, momentum is also conserved. Thus the collision is totally inelastic.
