What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research sampling strategies? Compare and contrast the strategies and describe some of the advantages and disadvantages of each.
There are three main types of qualitative research sampling.
They are purposeful sampling, quota sampling and snowball
sampling.
• Purposeful sampling: It is the most common sampling type. In this
the participants are selected or sought after pre-selected
criteria.
• Quota sampling: The researcher collects data from certain number
of participants that have certain characteristics.
• Snowball sampling: It is also called as chain referral sampling.
In this the participants refer the researcher to other who may
participate in the study.
There are two main types of sampling for quantitative research.
They are probability and non probability sampling. The main
difference between these two is randomization which means giving
equal opportunity to all the participants of being in the
study.
• Simple random sample: selects one person randomly.
• Stratified sampling: population is divided into subgroups and
participants are randomly selected from each group
• Systematic sampling: uses a specific system to select
members
• Cluster random sampling: divides the population into
clusters
• Multi stage random sampling: combination of one or more
methods.
• Convenience sampling: members are selected on availability
• Purposive sampling: members are purposefully selected
